Summer grew up in Detroit, Michigan, in a musical family, including her parents, who were opera singers. She attended Wayne State University, where she majored in Theatre Arts. She is a member of Friends of LA Opera and supports LA Opera’s Education and Community Engagement Programs, which benefit children who wouldn’t have access to classical music otherwise.
